What is Art Therapy?

About Me

I'm a fully qualified Art Psychotherapist, registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and a full member of the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT). I hold an MSc in Art Psychotherapy from Queen Margaret University and have experience across private practice, healthcare, education, and the third sector.

What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy offers a creative, supportive space to explore thoughts, emotions, and experiences, especially those that can be hard to put into words. It’s not about artistic skill or making ‘good’ art, but about using visual expression as a tool for reflection, insight, and emotional healing.

My Approach

I work in a psychodynamic, person-centred, trauma-informed way. This means we explore how past experiences may be shaping your present, and use art-making to surface and process what may be difficult to express verbally. Themes and metaphors often emerge in the artwork, offering valuable material for exploration and self-understanding.

I also integrate mindfulness and breathing techniques to support grounding, emotional regulation, and self-awareness throughout the therapeutic process.

Inclusivity & Accessibility

I’m committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and welcoming space where people of all backgrounds and abilities feel supported to express themselves authentically.

    Initial Consultation

Before we begin working together, I offer a free 20-minute consultation, either online or by phone.

This is an opportunity for us to discuss what has brought you to art therapy, explore your hopes for the sessions, and consider how we might work together.

You can arrange a consultation by completing the form below.

    Initial Meeting

If we agree during the consultation that art therapy may be a good fit for you, we’ll arrange an initial session, either online or in person.

This session provides a space for a more in-depth conversation about your current challenges and reasons for seeking therapy.

Together, we’ll create a therapy plan that suits your needs. This might be an open-ended arrangement with no fixed end date, or a focused block of sessions (e.g. 6 or 12 weeks).

Before this meeting, I’ll send you a therapy contract. You’ll have time during the session to review it, ask questions, and sign, if you feel ready to begin.

  • During our initial consultation, we will discuss the duration and frequency of sessions that best suit your needs. This may be open-ended or arranged in blocks of 6 or 12 weeks. These plans are flexible and can be adjusted as our work together progresses.

To support a consistent and reliable therapeutic process, sessions are typically held on the same day, at the same time and location each week. While weekly sessions are most common, fortnightly arrangements can also be considered to accommodate your schedule.

Each session is tailored to the individual. We will regularly review your progress and adjust the structure of our sessions as needed to ensure they continue to meet your goals.

  • For in-person sessions, I provide a wide variety of art materials, including pens, pencils, paints, pastels, collage materials, clay and fabrics.

All client artwork created during therapy will be safely and confidentially stored in my studio for the duration of our work together.

For online sessions, clients are responsible for sourcing their own materials. Suggested options include standard drawing supplies (such as pencils, pens, crayons, or pastels), paints, paper, collage materials, or any other materials that feel expressive and accessible. I am very happy to support you in selecting materials that suit your needs and preferences.

Clients attending online sessions are also responsible for the safe and confidential storage of any artwork created.

  • Sustainability is very important to me and my artistic practice. I prioritise sourcing art materials responsibly by supporting local, independent art shops and choosing sustainably produced products. I also emphasise using recycled or reasonably sourced packaging whenever possible.

With a strong personal commitment to environmental responsibility and a deep interest in nature-based approaches to art thearpy, I carefully select my materials and, when appropriate, integrate natural materials into my practice.

  • Your privacy, safety, and confidentiality are central to my practice. I am committed to protecting your personal information and ensuring a safe therapeutic environment.

I adhere strictly to the ethical standards and professional guidelines outlined by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT). I am also registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and comply fully with current data protection legislation, including the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR).

All personal data is stored securely and used only for the purpose of providing a professional art therapy service. Information is kept confidential, except in circumstances where there is a legal obligation or serious concern for your safety or the safety of others.

Full details regarding privacy, confidentiality, and data handling are outlined in the therapy contract, which is provided before sessions begin.

  • Please note that my art therapy service is not a crisis service.
